Protect is the fifth Tech learned by Lucca in Chrono Trigger. This Tech raises an ally's Physical Defense by 1/3, and it consumes 6 MP. It is also the only defensive Tech that Lucca learns.
While Protect is a useful Tech for reducing physical damage, equipping the Guardian Helm gives a character the same effect, but permanently during the battle.
Animation
Lucca spins around and raises her arm, with a distinct yellow circle with void lines appearing, contracting and becoming four energy balls that flutter around and dissappear. Lucca then holds her hammer with conviction in front of her and the target ally gets protected.
Name Origin
This Tech shares the same name as a spell or ability in the Final Fantasy series, and even has the same effect by temporarily increasing physical defense during battle.
However, the way that is written in Japanese is different from Final Fantasy, as in Chrono Trigger, its Japanese name is written as: プロテクト (Purotekuto), while in Final Fantasy it is written as: プロテス (Purotesu). Despite these changes, the meaning of both words does not change when translated into English.
